One of the biggest struggles as a student photographer is navigating the misconception that your work is “free” or just for “exposure.” Many people assume that because you’re still learning, you’re willing to work without compensation, which can devalue the effort and skill you’ve put into your craft. Balancing schoolwork and client projects is also tough, especially when you're striving to build a portfolio while managing deadlines. Despite these challenges, you can still present yourself as a professional by setting clear boundaries, having contracts in place, and charging fairly for your work. Being a student doesn’t mean you’re any less of a professional—you’re simply refining your skills while earning your education.
